From Camp Lee to the Great War: The Letters of Lester Scott and Charles Riggle: Podcast Episode 01

My Dear Sister . . .

World War I soldiers from Wheeling, West Virginia, Lester Scott and Charles “Dutch” Riggle were drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, Virginia, where so many Wheeling draftees and volunteers were trained. Lester Scott served as a Wagoner (mule team driver) in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. Dutch Riggle was a PFC with the same unit.

Archiving Wheeling’s Year in Review

Archiving Wheeling LogoOfficially launched in December of 2014, 2015 was Archiving Wheeling’s first full year, and it was a indeed good year for our fledgling community experiment to bridge collections, tell stories, and preserve Wheeling’s history.

What made last year such a great year?

To start, there were the partnerships with Weelunk, Wheeling National Heritage Area Corporation, Friends of Wheeling, The California University of Pennsylvania and Heinz History Center Affiliates Program, West Virginia Northern Community College and Alumni Association; the collections showcased from Heritage Partners The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston Archives, private collector Thaddeus Podrastsky, an Ohio Valley Hollywood Star (double), and of course, our very own Ohio County Public Library Archives; and then there were the guest authors Kate Quinn, Margaret Brennan, Bill Hogan, John Bowman, Jon Kniesner, and Wheeling Jesuit History Major, Becca Rodgers, a 2015 OCPL Archives intern. Not to mention the nearly 35,000 blog post views by visitors from over 70 countries!

Yep, a good year indeed.

The Dr. John Frissell Collection

Courtesy of the Archives of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, artifacts from the fascinating Dr. John Frissell Collection of Civil War era medical implements are now on display for the first time anywhere at the Ohio County Public Library. The collection was acquired from a local antiques dealer, who purchased the estate of a descendant of Dr. John Frissell, circa 2009.

For nearly a century, members of the Frissell family occupied a humble brick home on Monroe Street (now 14th), now one of the oldest extant structures in downtown Wheeling. Within the walls—both a residence and office—a small clinic was opened, and as late as the 1970s, medical instruments and supplies could still be found in the basement.
