She was also the trusted colleague and physician to labor leader <a href=\"https:\/\/ufw.org\/research\/history\/story-cesar-chavez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cesar Chavez<\/a> and the beloved friend and personal physician to social activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicworker.org\/dorothyday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dorothy Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Marion Theresa Moses was born in Wheeling on January 24, 1936. The house was torn down when the W.Va. 2 freeway was built. A wall and steps are all that remain in that spot. Her brother, Maron Moses, who now resides in California, related that their father grew up in the same neighborhood and knew labor leader <a href=\"https:\/\/walswheelingcommentaries.com\/2017\/10\/30\/a-labor-of-love-the-reuther-wheeling-labor-history-archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walter Reuther<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maron Moses has been an invaluable source of information and insight into his sister\u2019s life and work. He also provided all of the photographs that are featured in this article and in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R7lX_dVGSaA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener lightbox-video-0\">Lunch With Books program<\/a> that was presented online on January 26, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>As a child, Marion attended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiocountylibrary.org\/research\/immaculate-conception-church\/3520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immaculate Conception<\/a> School in South Wheeling. The family attended Mass every Sunday at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ololwv.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Our Lady of Lebanon Church<\/a> in Center Wheeling. Both sets of grandparents were Lebanese immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Her father was a salesman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiocountylibrary.org\/history\/meat-packing-industry-in-wheeling-in-1931\/2759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weimer Meat Packing<\/a> and Armour &amp; Co. The family moved to Charleston, WV in 1946, when Marion was 10 years old and her brother was 6. Image courtesy Maron Moses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Marion\u2019s interest in the medical field was sparked by the death of their 1-year-old sister, Margaret Rose, when Marion was 8.<\/p>\n<p>Her brother said Marion later wrote a long article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ajnonline\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>American Journal of Nursing<\/em><\/a>, in which \u201cshe mentioned that when we were little, she knew her little sister didn\u2019t have to die. Our dad said, \u2018No, women become nurses,\u2019 and for some reason, she listened. It was probably the last time in her life she ever listened to a man. There was a certain obedience to her. Cesar (Chavez) gave her a job and she went out and did it. My dad was the authority. She did what he said.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Marion, who was always a good student, graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1957 and earned a master\u2019s degree in nursing education from Columbia University Teachers College in 1960.<br>\nShe worked as a nurse in Charleston and in California, but never lost sight of her original goal. As her brother pointed out, \u201cShe always wanted to become a doctor. She was 40 when she graduated from medical school, which was very remarkable at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Cesar &amp; The Farm Workers<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p>Marion was working full-time as a nurse in California and studying English literature at the University of California at Berkeley when she learned of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eji.org\/news\/history-racial-injustice-farmworkers-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">farm workers movement<\/a>. She met Cesar Chavez in October 1965 and soon became involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ufw.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Farm Workers union<\/a>. Drake recalled Marion\u2019s \u201cfeisty determination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drake remarked, \u201cI would like to have been in on some of her conversations with Cesar Chavez. She was featured in a 2014 documentary, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i5yxBAVaJmM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener lightbox-video-2\">Cesar\u2019s Last Fast.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Lifelong Friends<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p>Chavez sent Moses to New York City in 1968 to boycott grape shipments and raise funds for the union. In New York, Moses met feminist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gloriasteinem.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gloria Steinem<\/a>, who offered Moses a place to stay, and they became lifelong friends. She was often the only woman doing the kind of work she was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Moses dedicated her life to \u201cjustice and compassion,\u201d according to Steinem. She completed pre-med studies at UC Berkeley and earned a medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1976. Image courtesy Maron Moses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While attending medical school and doing her residency, Marion visited friends at Maryhouse, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicworker.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic Worker<\/a> headquarters in New York, and became a close friend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorothysplace.org\/dorothy-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dorothy Day<\/a>, whom she first met in 1964. She and Day were both voracious readers and spent hours talking about books, her brother related.<\/p>\n<p>During a 1977 visit to Day\u2019s cottage at the Spanish Camp on Staten Island, Day patted Dr. Moses\u2019 hand and said, \u201cIt\u2019s so nice to have a woman doctor.\u201d Thus began her role as Day\u2019s personal physician. Day\u2019s daughter, Tamar Hennessy, believed that Moses\u2019 medical care added years to Day\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least a couple of times a month, Marion would go out and have dinner with her. A really beautiful friendship formed,\u201d her brother recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Author Rosalie G. Riegle interviewed Dr. Moses for her book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/203980.Dorothy_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dorothy Day: Portraits by Those Who Knew Her<\/em><\/a>, published by Orbis Books in 2003 and still in print. Image courtesy Maron Moses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In chapter six of Riegle\u2019s book, Dr. Moses was quoted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOne of the first things I did after I got to New York was to take the subway, and then the ferry and the train, to Spanish Camp out in Staten Island, where Dorothy was staying. It was a beautiful, sunny day in July. Dorothy was out in the backyard, sitting on one of those folding chairs. So I just got a chair and sat next to her. She patted me on the knee and said, \u2018It\u2019s so nice to have a woman doctor.\u2019 She didn\u2019t ask me to be her doctor; it was by her fiat.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Recounting her friendship with Day, Dr. Moses stated in Riegle\u2019s book:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI had met her when I was first in college, but I really got to know her when I lived in New York in 1968, doing fund raising for Cesar Chavez and working on the grape boycott. And then in 1969, I was caring for Cesar in Fresno when Dorothy visited him, and while I was in medical school in Philadelphia, I\u2019d spend every holiday except Christmas in New York, so I\u2019d always be down at the Worker. That\u2019s when Dorothy and I really got to be very close. Image courtesy Maron Moses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later, after leaving New York, Dr. Moses studied for a doctorate in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore for two years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Moses returned to California, where she worked as medical director for the United Farm Workers from 1983 until 1986. She founded the Pesticide Education Center in San Francisco in 1988 and served as its director until her retirement in 2016.<br>\nMonica Moore, co-founder of the Pesticide Action Network, described Dr. Moses\u2019 commitment to farm workers as being \u201cway beyond professional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the <em>LA Times<\/em>, Moore stated, \u201cFor her, the work she did was personal, spiritual. Her passion ran deep and very, very long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerned about pesticide poisonings and cancer clusters, Dr. Moses conducted research, presented workshops, testified before congressional committees and participated in advocacy efforts. After the surgery, Dr. Moses needed treatment at a rehabilitative facility, but her insurer balked at the request. Her brother said that Chavez\u2019s granddaughter, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, who worked for then-U.S. Senator<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/administration\/vice-president-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Kamala Harris<\/a>, was contacted for help. Rodriguez sent a letter from Harris\u2019 office, and Dr. Moses \u2013 who had cared for Rodriguez as a child \u2014 was admitted to a rehab center to receive the necessary care. (It also should be noted that President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/iga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appointed Rodriguez<\/a> as director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs in January 2021.)<\/p>\n<p>Even as Dr. Moses\u2019 health started to decline, her brother said, \u201cShe would still do a lot of phone consulting. She was keeping up to date on her research on the computer. \u2026 In her last years, she didn\u2019t have a lot of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On August 28, 2020, Dr. Moses died of heart failure and renal failure, at age 84, in San Francisco. Image courtesy Maron Moses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, several months after Dr. Moses\u2019 death, her family and friends offer a glimpse into the person behind the professional exterior.<\/p>\n<p>Her brother, Maron, continues to maintain a close relationship with his law school roommate, Wheeling attorney Lester C. \u201cTed\u201d Hess, a longtime member and former chairman of the Ohio County Public Library\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>Marion and her mother visited Hess\u2019 law office on Chapline Street in 1973, her brother recalled. Twenty-two years later, Hess served as a pallbearer at Mrs. Moses\u2019 funeral.<\/p>\n<p>Hess and Dr. Moses corresponded occasionally and talked about her study of pesticides.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Hess said he heard a lot about Dr. Moses\u2019 activities and accomplishments from her brother. \u201cShe was larger than life, she really was,\u201d Hess remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Her cousin, Jacquie Moses, a Wheeling native who is a teacher in San Francisco, spent considerable time with Dr. Moses in her later years. She remembers her spirit and humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my octogenarian buddy,\u201d Jacquie Moses said, adding, \u201cI miss her dearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Describing his sister\u2019s personality, Maron Moses said, \u201cShe was the \u2018alpha dog\u2019 of the Moses family. She was always very determined, very driven. \u2026 She knew what she wanted and went directly for it. \u2026 She never did anything halfway. The collection included an amazing array of photographs and many letters from famous figures.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, her brother sent 25 boxes of Dr. Moses\u2019 material on the farm workers movement to <a href=\"https:\/\/library.stanford.edu\/spc\/university-archives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanford University\u2019s archives<\/a>.<br>\nIn 1984, Dr. Moses placed some of her papers, dating from 1960 to 1970, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/as.reuther.wayne.edu\/repositories\/2\/resources\/1322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University\u2019s Walter Reuther Library<\/a> in Detroit. Image courtesy Maron Moses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/ufw.org\/drmoses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lengthy online post<\/a> on August 29, 2020, officials of the United Farm Workers mourned Dr. Moses\u2019 passing. The post by Jocelyn Sherman noted that Dr. Moses was \u201ca national authority on the pesticide poisoning of agricultural workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherman wrote, \u201cDr. Moses turned a weekend in Delano (California) into a lifetime of service helping Cesar and farm workers combat the perils of pesticides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miriam Pawel, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Crusades-Cesar-Chavez-Biography\/dp\/1608197107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Crusades of Cesar Chavez<\/em><\/a>, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2020-09-06\/op-ed-remembering-marion-moses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tribute<\/a> that was published in the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> on September 6, 2020. She stated,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAmong the many remarkable people I have met during years of writing about the farm worker movement, Marion Moses stands out \u2013 not as the most accomplished, intelligent or influential, though she was all those things, but because she possessed a moral clarity and force that powered her through an extraordinary journey\u2026Her legacy offers a beacon of hope and a badly needed respite in this age of anxiety. Time after time, in her determined way, Moses overcame obstacles to do good.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<p>In conclusion, it saddens me that, despite her national acclaim, Dr. Moses remained largely unknown in her native city during her lifetime.
