The project will focus on stories of life in Wheeling\u2019s diverse neighborhoods.\u00a0<!--more-->\n<hr>\n<h2>Series\u00a0One: Ann Thomas, Growing Up in Jim Crow Wheeling<\/h2>\n<p>Series\u00a0one features <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohiocountylibrary.org\/wheeling-history\/5040\" target=\"_blank\">Ann Prince Thomas<\/a>, a pioneer and witness to history. She was just six months old when her mother moved to Wheeling from a North Carolina tobacco farm to help Ann\u2019s aunt and uncle run the New Dixie Restaurant on Chapline Street in the middle of what was, at the time, an established African-American neighborhood.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-672 gallery-columns-2 gallery-size-medium'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"boxersandswipers\" title=\"Ann Thomas\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.archivingwheeling.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ann-Thomas1.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"lightbox[gallery-0]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.archivingwheeling.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ann-Thomas1.jpg?fit=203%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"Ann Thomas was the first African American to graduate from the Ohio Valley General Hospital&#039;s school of nursing. After retiring from football, he ran for City Council, won by a landslide, and served four terms.  He was the first and, to date, the only African American ever elected to Wheeling\u2019s City Council.\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Ann grew up during the era of \u201cJim Crow\u201d (government sanctioned, racial segregation) and witnessed the turbulent transition to desegregation.
